Removing and replacing the entire structure is the most straight forward answer to the ASR issues in a pool project. Deciding on removing and replacing your pool and/or spa is a large undertaking that can take anywhere from 3 to 8 months. Starting with the removal of your pool, essentially, everything has to go. From the tile and coping to the plaster and gunite/shotcrete shell, most of it needs to go. Some of the plumbing can be saved as well as any piece of pool equipment that is still functional. Depending on how your pool deck is attached or set, it may need to be removed as well. Once everything has been removed and prepared as needed, we begin the pool re-building process, similar to the process taken to build your project the first time around, with a few minor differences.
As arduous as this process sounds, it is the course of action against ASR that offers the least risk of another ASR diagnosis. To remove all of the initial, infected concrete and starting over again with better concrete is a great approach to this ever-growing problem.
